So I’m waiting around this morning with my thumb somewhere anticipating the arrival of a carpenter the builder of our house supplied to fix a few things.  Builder stated he’d be there 8:30/9am, 9/9:30am at the latest.  Pretty large range of time, but fine, it’s a Saturday.  I call the guy (seeing where this is going) at 9am….bad connection, he asks if he can call me back in 2 minutes…..  Tick tock…..I get a call at 9:58am.  “Oh, I’m not going to be able to make it.  I had an emergency come up.”.  What is that?  Did a piece of wood get splintered into your client’s finger?  This is just people being people and either a) I’m just going to have to grin and bear it, or b) I’m going to have be more thorough and start houding people.

I’m thinking the latter is the way to go.  You go to a restaurant, and you order a salad with the dressing on the side (and there it is, blam! 4 tablespoons of thousand island dressing drenching your 99 cent head of lettuce aka, your $8.00 salad) —– you order 3 beef enchiladas and wind up with a beef, chicken and cheese…..”Oh, I thought you stated XXX” —— as one Joe Pesci stated in the movie ‘They F you at the drive through’.  I don’t think I’ll ever be able to order take out again, without checking after being cheated out my pork fried rice a couple of weeks ago ——-the check should have been mailed to you, let me check into that for you.  So I ask “when should I expect to hear back from you Ms. Client?”….oh, this afternoon (that was Wednesday).  My work email isn’t working correctly (hasn’t for over a week) – “I’ll give you a call back this afternoon”, states my service provider. —– that too was Wednesday.  I had a scheduled HVAC guy to come over “sometime Monday” (the ol’ I’ll call you Monday to give you an exact time)….and the call about having to come Tuesday, then the proverbial (emergency) “I’ll have to do it next week”.  Am I not a paying customer???????

Maybe I’m too nice?  Those that know me, know I’m not….I’m considerate and actually respectful of others, but I have little tolerance for stupid inconsiderate people.  These people suck.  Ok, I’m off my high horse now.  Have a good rest of your weekend……and by the way….when I open the door for you at the mall….it’s ok to say ‘thank you’.  Oh, and don’t get me started on smokers…..that’ll have to be another blog entry.

At a Thanksgiving party a couple of weeks ago, I found out that one of our friends who deals with collectibles all the time, had the foresight to create a Barack Obama coin for sale.  He essentially bought out the US Mint’s collection of Kennedy Half-Dollars and went into hock for purchasing TV time on CNN and MSNBC for his commercials.  As he stated, the cheesier, the better.  He intentially put in there ‘but wait there’s more’ because he knows that’s what sells.  Of course, he stands to make a huge profit and the best part is…….he had no product before selling!  Outstanding.  Sell something you don’t have and get it made later.  Brilliant.  Great job “B”.  And yes, the commercials are cheesy.

So it’d been a whole month since I’d played cards in a casino.  Withdrawal was at hand.  I somehow have survived.  So when two guys I played cards with flew up for the weekend to play some cards, who was I not to be hospitable.  Played Friday at Foxwoods and with few exceptions it was a fairly layed back evening.  I wound up winning a little, which is always good, but really enjoyed needling this one guy.

He was around 22-23, cocky…sitting behind about $700 at the 1-2NL table.  He felt he was doing so well that he opted to get a massage.  Somehow, that massage cost him about $500 because at the end of it, he was sitting there behind only $200.  Somehow the cockiness went away.  Sheepishness took over.  He played scared and so when the following hand came up, I couldn’t help myself.  He raised to 15  and with six callers and me in the big blind, I ‘gambled’ with my 3-4 clubs.   With around $100 in the pot, the flop came AQ5 with two clubs.  So with no pair and a gut shot straight and flush draws, I called his $40 bet.  He  checked the turn (all other players had folded) and told him that if he folded right now, I’d give him half the pot.  He thought and said no, so I rifled out $100 and he mucked his KK face up.  I turned over my no pair and he really got fired up.  Something about nice “farking” hand or something like that.  Needled him for another 20 minutes and left the table to play with Wade and Jim.

My favorite hand of the trip was about and hour before we’d left for good (at Mohegan Sun).  I’m playing in the BB with two black fives and call a $35 preflop raise by the maniac on the button.  Two to the flop of 5,6,10 all hearts.  I throw out there $75, he insta-raises to $200.  Ugh.  I elect to call.  Turn brings another heart.  I check, as does he.  He obviously has no heart…or at least not a big one.  River brings nothing and I throw out $200 without batting an eyelash.  He mucks his set of sixes faces up in disgust and so of course I had to expose my set of fives face up which really (you can tell) tore him up.

Just had to add this picture of the guy sitting at Wade’s and my table late Saturday with the wifebeater T and Rubic’s Cube.  He’d mix up the cube, and solve it in 5 minutes.  Couldn’t play poker worth a crap though.

Ventured up to eastern Connecticut to both Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods this past weekend.   Had a couple of friends from Atlanta visiting and wanted to be a gracious ‘local’ and take the trek up there.  Spent the evening doing our thing, dragging the occassional poker pot and went to head back to the hotel late Saturday/early Sunday, but upon doing so, saw blizzardy conditions.  Took me 40 minutes to drive the 10 miles, ugh.  But at least my southern friends got to see the white stuff…along with Wade’s comment….’this stuff is cold’.  Brilliant!

Woo-hoo, football season is over….finally!  Well, at least for Syracuse it is.  Now we can move on to bigger and better things like a promising season for the Orange who missed the last two year’s NCAA’s.  It’s looking solid this year with winning a pre-season tournament and already marque wins over Florida and Kansas.  A tough Big-East schedule is upon them, but a nice 7-0 start definitely helps going into murderer’s row (AKA – The Big East) – with EIGHT Nationally ranked teams….wow!

Yes, they have 16 teams in the conference, but even teams 9-16 pose some decent threats.  It should definitely be a fun season, and team to watch these next four months.

Finally these guys get it.  The CEO of Ford today finally put his money where his mouth is stating he’d work for $1.00 if Ford needed to take any government dollars.  Let’s face it…these guys are more than set for life.  If you really want to make a statement, this is one way of doing it….not flying in on corporate jets.  If you think of entrepreneurs, this is what they do….not pay themselves until turning a profit…mostly because as S corporations their company’s profits/losses trickle down to their personal returns.

But guys like Nardelli (Chrysler) who got his golden/platinum parachute when he left Home Depot (and I’m sure did ok when he was a higher-up at GE prior), are fairly well ‘set for life’.  Why embarrass yourself in front of 300 million Americans by crying poor after flying in on corporate jets.
